How To Knit a Scarf

Knitting a scarf requires only patience and perseverance. The following step by step instructions will demonstrate how it is done.

How to Make a Scarf

Required Tools and Materials

Yarn (6 oz)
Knitting needles (size 8)
Scissors
Cardboard (8” x 5”)
Crochet hook (medium or large)

Step 1

For this project, you’ll need midweight yarn and size 8 needles. If you want to make a bigger scarf, get extra yarn.

Step 2

Begin by knitting a sample square. In this project the size is 4 inches per inch. Change the needle sizes as needed to attain the right gauge. Be sure the stitches are loose.

Step 3

Knit across the rows. The cast is 26 stitches. Knit 1, purl 1. Repeat the process for the rows until the desired length is attained. When you are finished knitting a scarf, cast off the knitting.

Step 4

To put fringes on the scarf, wind the yarn on a cardboard. The cardboard should be 8 inches long by 5 inches wide. The yarn must be winded on the cardboard 60 times. This may vary depending on the size of your scarf.

Step 5

Put one of the scissor blades between the yarn and the cardboard (this is at one end of the cardboard). Slice the yarn.

Step 6

Separate the yarn into 5 strands.

Step 7

Fold one set of strands in half. Get the crochet hook. Use it to pull through a stitch at the scarf’s edge. When knitting a scarf, make sure you pull just enough the fold makes a loop.

Step 8

Again using the crochet hook, pull the strands back to front. This is through the loop made earlier. To tighten, pull.

Step 9

Commence the fringe at the right or left side. Distribute the yarn group five stitches apart. End the fringe at the other edge. Repeat the steps for the scarf’s other side.

About Yarns

There are many types of yarns to choose from. Wool is used quite often, although the softness varies. Aside from the scarf, they can be used to knit socks. Some 100% cotton yarns are designed for water and can be used for wash clothes too.

Binding Off

After knitting a scarf, you’ll have to bind off. This is the process that takes the knitting off and prevents it from disintegrating. The process is really easy.

Begin by knitting the two stitches at the next row. Put the left knitting needle in the first stitch to the right. Pull it over the top of the second stitch and above the right knitting needle point’s end. This is the first bind off.

Knit the stitch on the left needle. Repeat the process just described. There is one stitch remaining on the right knitting needle. Take off the knitting needle. Expand the final stitch loop a bit. Cut the yarn and pull through the loop.

Knitting a scarf only requires basic knowledge of knitting. By using this technique, you should be able to make several of these scarves.
